Briefly introduce yourself and the type of art you create
Maku Dakar
A Fusion of Cultures Through Art
My work is a vibrant fusion of cultures, blending deep Senegalese roots with Nordic influences. I’m using different materials and techniques to settle my originality mainly abstract on patterns also including figures.
Maku Dakar invites viewers into a world where tradition and modernity intertwine. This unique blend highlights the beauty of diversity, origins and personality.
As a visual artist, I will say that I’m a free soul. My painting topics are mostly from my African background and also from my daily life here and there. My style is bold, colorful and can variate depending on the collection. I like to stay out of the box; from abstract to landscapes and figures, my work will always define my personality.
When do you feel most creative?
During night time I’m mostly productive.
What activities do you enjoy when you’re not feeling creative?
I go to gym many times during the week. I also spend time with my beloved ones.
If you could go back in time, what would you change about your creative journey?
I will not say that I regret my journey. Sometimes I feel like I’m in the wrong country for my art career when things are not well, but in life everything has a meaning and purpose.
What has been your biggest challenge as a BIPOC artist in Finland?
Straight away getting grants and basic supports, since I have been doing mostly everything on my own.
If you had a “Creative Genie,” what are your top three wishes?
- Difficult question but…
- As an African, establish a well-represented African cultural centre
- Have our own art gallery
- And an administrative team
Where do you find your inspiration?
From almost everywhere, daily life, trips, people, social media, etc.
What are your top three tips for emerging creatives in Finland?
- Sincerity
- Engagement
- Commitment
What’s your motto in life?
Pure soul, clean heart, beautiful mindset.
